The success of an event is often due to the dedication and disposition of its volunteers. This was the case during the Square Dance Showdown held earlier this month in Gjoa Haven.

Elizabeth Anavilok, who has volunteered at the annual event since 2008, is one of the key people who helped organize and fundraise for the event.
"I just wanted to try it and see how it goes," said Anavilok, when asked why she volunteers. "The event was really good. It was a really good entertainment all weekend."
Born and raised in Gjoa Haven, Anavilok has three daughters, one son and seven grandchildren. She also volunteers at the spring and Christmas games and any other special event happening in the community.
"I just like to volunteer. It's a lot of work but it's always great to volunteer," she said.
The three-day square dancing competition saw five dance teams each from Gjoa Haven and Taloyoak, two from Baker Lake as well as one each from Kugaaruk, Rankin Inlet and Kugluktuk compete for the square dancing crown. The team from Gjoa Haven earned the top honours, while Qinayuak team from Taloyoak finished second and the Natsiaq team from Taloyoak finished third.
Senior administrative officer Gord Dinney expressed his appreciation for Anavilok's dedication and volunteer work on behalf of hamlet council and residents. He said the hamlet was grateful and appreciative. Speaking with residents, Dinney said he did not hear of any problems during the event.
"On behalf of council and the residents, we wanted to express our appreciation for her volunteerism and time she dedicated over the past number of days in organizing the event," he said."It was a tremendous success."
Anavilok was one of three Gjoa Haven residents receiving a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal on Jan. 13. Anavilok, George Porter and Miriam Aglukkaq received the honours for their contribution to the community.
The medals commemorate the 60th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne. During the year of celebrations, 60,000 Canadians were recognized with the medal.
"I was really surprised when I got one," said Anavilok. "It's very special. It means a lot to me."
