Six awards for NWT News/North Two first-place finishes at Saskatchewan Weekly Newspaper AssociationNorthern News Services Published Monday, April 29, 2013
Lyndsay Herman placed first for Best News Story of The Year. Her story ("Nurse claims he was fired for reporting sexual abuse," June 18, 2012), on a health care workers struggles with what he claimed were poor resources for reporting sexual abuse in his community of employment received 100 out of 100 points from the judges.
Paul Bickford took second for Best Research Story. His story ("Very troubling ... very disturbing," July 9, 2012), about murder rates in the NWT was praised by the judges for being a solid piece with a lot of statistical data and different perspectives.
Laura Busch placed third for Best Post Secondary Coverage. Her article ("Learning to teach," May 21, 2012), about the first graduates of the aboriginal culture and language instructors program was hailed by judges as a great good news story with a strong hook into issues important to the community.
Jesse Winter, Casey Lessard and Chris Puglia's work on the 2012 Arctic Winter Games special section placed third for best special section.
The judges particularly loved the photos and said there was something for everyone inside.
A submitted photo from Margaret Chicot ("Just waiting for a ride," June 18, 2012) won first for best wildlife photo with her shot of a black bear in back of a pickup truck.
Jesse Winter took second for best black and white photo with his shot of the championship flame at the NWT Track and Field Championships, published June 11, 2012.
