ARVIAT
Former Los Angeles Kings assistant coach Andy Nowicki delivered a hockey skills and youth leadership program in Arviat earlier this month.

The hockey camp was hosted by the Hamlet of Arviat and its recreation department.

Nowicki said a steering committee comprised of senior administrative officer Ed Murphy, recreation leader Clive Alareak and minor hockey coach Gleason Uppahuak did the legwork to ensure 95 young hockey players enjoyed an actionpacked camp.

He said he was assisted during the camp by local coaches Uppahuak, Tony Uluadluak, Douglas Ollie and Ryan O'Connor.

"I always enjoy any time I get the chance to visit Arviat and I was impressed by what I saw on the ice this time, especially," said Nowicki.

"Arviat is developing some fine players and the work of the local coaches is very good.

"The Hamlet of Arviat was very appreciative of Calm Air being a major sponsor of my visit, and Clive (Alareak) told me a lot of kids and parents reported they loved the camp."

Uppahuak said Nowicki delivered a very successful threeday camp.

He said every one of the more than 90 players who attended had fun.

"It was great having our own minor hockey coaches helping Andy, and we all learned a few tricks on doing drills and how to approach and talk to the players," said Uppahuak.

"I grew up with Andy coming here to do hockey camps and I used to look forward to his arrival.

"I want the kids of Arviat to experience the same kind of camp at least once per year, because a lot of parents can't afford to have their kids attend hockey camp in the south due to the high cost of transportation.
