BEHCHOKO/RAE-EDZO
Rape and indecent assault charges against a former Northwest Territories politician were stayed last August, News/North has learned.

Leon Lafferty, former Behchoko chief and MLA for North Slave, was charged along with community members Jonas Bouvier and Leonard Camsell in 2011. The incidents allegedly took place on March 1, 1979.

A stay of proceedings request for all three men was filed on June 25, 2012 and was granted on August 27, 2012, according to court documents.

The documents did not give reasons for why the charges were stayed nor would the Crown comment because the proceedings were not held in open court.

A preliminary hearing held in Behchoko on March 21, 2012 committed Lafferty, Bouvier and Camsell to trial on counts of rape and indecent assault.
