Stabbing at Gold Range

RCMP officers responded to a complaint that a 22-year-old man from Behchoko was stabbed in front of the Gold Range Bistro at about 11:43 p.m. on Saturday. The man suffered superficial stab wounds - four to the torso and one to the leg. He was brought to Stanton Territorial Hospital where he was treated and released.

RCMP identified and arrested a 19-year-old man from Behchoko as a suspect. Charges haven't been laid in the incident and the suspect was released, said Cpl. Barry Ledoux. RCMP is asking that anyone with information regarding this incident to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Internet users may experience disruptions in service between 12:22 p.m. and 1 p.m. today and tomorrow while a satellite passes between the sun and the Northwestel ground station, a company spokesperson said.

The interruptions started Feb. 22, are expected to continue until Thursday and typically happen twice per year.

Convoy to honour truckers

The upcoming Convoy for a Cause fundraiser will be dedicated to Lawrence Ambler and Alfred Conner, the two truckers who lost their lives on Highway 3 recently, said Lea Martin, director of the NT Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

Planned for March 16, the second annual event will include a moment of silence and recognition about the challenges, hardships, perseverance and commitment the trucking industry has to the North, Martin said. Last year the event raised $31,000 for Special Olympics NWT. The convoy involves a long line of big-rig trucks which drive a 15-km route along Highways 3 and 4, through downtown Yellowknife to their final destination at the Multiplex.

Busy students

Repulse Bay

Students at Tusarvik School in Repulse Bay have been kept busy with a number of school and extracurricular projects during the past month.

The students did their part to promote the Tobacco Has No Place On Our Land program, filled a Sea-Can with pop cans to earn $1,500 for Tusarvik, and took part in a special Hoops Challenge as part of the Jump Rope for Heart program to raise money for the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.

For more on the youths' antitobacco efforts, please see the March 13 edition of Kivalliq News.

Hockey town

Rankin Inlet

Puck lovers in Rankin Inlet continue to be kept smiling as major events continue to take to the ice in their community.

With barely enough time to catch their breath after the Polar Bear Plate juvenilejunior and Avataq Sakku First Aviation Cup senior men's championships, the Rankin arena is expected to be rocking again this coming weekend as Iqaluit and Repulse Bay come to town as part of Northern Hockey Challenge roundrobin play.

The five scheduled games are of huge importance because only two points separate Iqaluit from Rankin and Kuujjuaq atop the standings, while Repulse has its back to the wall and needs to win at least two of three games this weekend to remain in serious contention for a playoff spot.

Nine months for spousal assault

Arviat

A 47yearold Arviat man was sentenced last week to nine months in jail after pleading guilty to assaulting his wife with a tire iron on Dec. 25, 2011.

Joe Kablutsiak testified he didn't mean to hit his wife when he threw the tire iron, which bounced off a wall and struck the woman in the face, fracturing her skull.

The woman endured several surgeries before making a full recovery.

Kablutsiak was released due to credit for time already served, and placed on two years probation with the condition he refrain from consuming alcohol.

International Women's Day

Nunavut

The Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council is hosting an art show and competition from March 5 to 12 at the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum in Iqaluit in celebration of International Women's Day on March 8.

The day has even more significance this year after a recent Statistics Canada report for 2011 showed the rate of violence against women in Nunavut is a staggering 13 times that of the national rate.

Council members from Rankin Inlet, Baker Lake, Coral Harbour, Kugaaruk and Iqaluit will wrap up the council's annual board meeting on March 8.

Qulliit will then announce its Wise Women Award and Outstanding Female Youth of the Year Award for 2013.
