Stabbing trial date set

The case against a woman allegedly involved in the Fort Gary apartments stabbing is set to go to trial in the summer.

Nancy Ruben is charged with assaulting a man with a frying pan and assault causing bodily harm.

The charges stem from an incident on Nov. 29 in which a 44-year-old male was stabbed multiple times. The man sought help at a neighbouring apartment and was treated at Stanton Territorial Hospital.

Ruben's trial is set for June 6 at 9:30 a.m.

Tyson Ruben-Bucher and Dean Ruben are also charged with attempted murder in relation to the incident. Ruben-Bucher is set to appear in court by video on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. and Dean is expected to appear on Tuesday morning.

Bevington calls for oversight

Western Arctic MP Dennis Bevington is calling on Parliament to update the Canada Petroleum Resources Act to be more accountable to Canadians.

Bevington introduced a private member's bill in the House of Commons on Monday that asks for all oil and gas lease transfers to be approved by a minister and allow for public input.

Leases may currently be transferred privately between companies without government oversight.

Restricted travel for two winter roads

Travel restrictions have been placed on the Mackenzie Valley winter road north of Wrigley and on the Trout Lake winter road.

Nighttime travel restrictions went into effect on March 26. All motorists can only begin trips between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. and must be off the roads by 11 a.m. Any vehicle found on the roads between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. could be subject to fines.

During the past two years, the Mackenzie Valley winter road has lasted until March 31. Because of warm temperatures, the road might close as early as Friday, said Earl Blacklock, a spokesperson with the Department of Transportation.

"It's deteriorating pretty fast," he said.

Water Stewardship Award given to Sambaa K'e Dene Band

Sambaa K'e Dene Band has been awarded the first Council of the Federation Excellence in Water Stewardship Award for the Northwest Territories.

The award recognizes outstanding achievement, innovative practice and leadership in the area of water stewardship. The band collected 44 drums containing hazardous material from the community landfill which were shipped to a hazardous waste facility for disposal. The liquids could have potentially leaked from the old drums into the groundwater and then into Trout Lake, the source of the community's drinking water.

The band is also planning other activities to manage contaminants and protect the water source.

Excitement ramps up for soccer season

Soccer will soon be in the air in Fort Simpson.

The annual Connie Loutit Memorial Soccer Tournament will take place in the village from April 5 to 7. Teams from Fort Resolution, Fort Smith, Fort Liard, Behchoko and Gameti are expected to compete along with hometown teams.

The tournament will include five age divisions for boys and girls including U12, U14, U16, U19 and open men's and women's.

Easter Egg Hunt in Fort Simpson

The Open Doors Society will be holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 1 in Fort Simpson.

The event will take place at Bompas Elementary School between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Children of all ages are invited.

Activities will include a barbecue with hotdogs and hamburgers, games, and the hunt. Every child will also receive a treat bag to take home.

Jamboree season starts

It's obvious spring has sprung when the jamborees kick off in and around Inuvik.

The 56th edition of the Muskrat Jamboree starts Apr. 5, and chair Liz Gordon said it looks sure to be a fun time.

"Five couples are vying to be crowned king and queen," she said, "and we have some great prizes. The jamboree will be the highlight of the spring."

As is traditional, the Aklavik jamboree is slated for Easter weekend, with others to follow in Tuktoyaktuk and the region.

Curlers swept so far

The Inuvik firefighters' team is having a tough time at the Canadian Firefighters Curling Association National Championships.

So far the team composed of Victor Parnell, Dave Dempsey and Duane DeBastien has compiled a 0-6 record, said Fire Chief Jim Sawkins.

"They're not faring well but they're great ambassadors for Inuvik," he said.

The team won the chance to go to the tournament, which is a first for Inuvik, after placing second at the territorial championships.

The winning team from Fort Simpson turned down the chance to go to New Brunswick, leaving Inuvik the opportunity.

Energy grants for schools

BP Canada is following up on last year's successful introduction of the A+ For Energy Program in the NWT, and the Beaufort Delta Educational Council region.

The grant program offers $10,000 for innovative energy ideas at schools. In 2012, the grant was awarded to Jason Dayman, of East Three Elementary School, to install solar panels to power the school's on-the-land camp.

In addition to the $10,000 grant, the winning teachers also attend a BP-hosted energy conference in Canmore, Alta., in the summer.

Homeless shelter seeks board members

The Inuvik Homeless Shelter is looking for some fresh faces to serve on its board of directors.

The organization is a "well-established non-profit charitable society providing housing services for those in need," the shelter stated in a news release.

Anyone who would like to serve on the board of directors, or who would like to have additional information, can contact the organization.

The appointments to the board would be for one-year terms.
