Sweeping the rink Firefighters heat up the ice in curling tournament;
Inuvik takes second placeT. Shawn Giilck Northern News Services Published Thursday, February 7, 2013
The annual NWT Volunteer Firefighters Curling Championships were on and Inuvik was hosting. The home community had the odds in its favour by entering three teams in the five-team competition. Organizer Paul Arthorn, who is also the president of the Inuvik Fire Association, said it was all in good fun. "We host the tournament every five years," he explained. "It's a good way for volunteer firefighters to get to meet other small departments. Inuvik is the biggest department outside of Yellowknife." "It can get very competitive, though," Arthorn said. Hay River and Fort Smith were the other teams at the tournament. Graham Chamberlain of Hay River said the play was going well as he and his teammates faced off against an Inuvik team that had previously lost to Fort Simpson. "I don't want to talk about the score," he growled with mock indignation. As it turned out, the team was in good company losing to Fort Simpson. No one else managed to take them down, as the team went undefeated in the tournament. Arthorn said that earned the Deh Cho team a spot in the national championships to be held next month in New Brunswick. However, Fort Simpson turned the opportunity down, which leaves the second-place team from Inuvik the chance to take its place. That opportunity is still being discussed. Arthorn said it would be a major undertaking for the department and the team because of travel costs and time off. Team members would require approximately two weeks to travel and compete in the tournament and then return home.
