DELINE/FORT FRANKLIN
A Deline man has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in connection with an incident in the community at the beginning of this month.

The accused is 38-year-old Gary Beyonnie.

According to an RCMP news release, during the early morning hours of Feb. 1, the Deline detachment responded to a call involving a man who reportedly required medical attention.

When police arrived on scene, they located the injured man. The 44-year-old resident of Deline was taken to the community's Dora Gully Medical Clinic.

Due to the extent of his injuries, the victim was later medevaced to Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife.

As a result of an investigation, Beyonnie was charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault, and was jailed.

The accused made his second court appearance on Feb. 21 in Yellowknife Territorial Court. His next court date is May 3 in Yellowknife.

As of last week, the victim was still in hospital recovering from his injuries.

The information on the charges was contained in a Feb. 21 news release from the RCMP's 'G' Division.

Cpl. Barry Ledoux, the division's media relations officer, said no previous news release had been issued on the charges.

"Given the nature of the investigation and the seriousness of the charges laid, we needed some time to continue to gather not only physical evidence but witness accounts of the event," he explained.

Ledoux said the RCMP does not disclose any information to the public or media which may jeopardize an investigative or court processes.

As for what led the RCMP to lay a charge of attempted murder, he said, "Given the seriousness of the assault, it warranted the charge for the attempt to commit murder."

Ledoux would not discuss the extent of the victim's injuries.

"All we can say is his injuries were serious," he said.

The officer also declined to say whether a weapon was involved.

The RCMP investigation into the incident is ongoing.
