A community search for a missing 14-year-old Fort Good Hope girl came to a tragic end on New Year's Eve.

The body of the teen, whose name is not being released at the request of her family, was found last Monday afternoon, near the Fort Good Hope reservoir.

Foul play is not suspected in the girl's death, said Cathy Menard, chief coroner of the Northwest Territories. The coroner's office is now investigating, and released little information about the circumstances surrounding the death last week.

"This 14-year-old female was found outdoors and she had been missing since Dec. 29, and was found Dec. 31," Menard said.

The teen was reported missing to Fort Good Hope RCMP on Dec. 30, according to a news release, when the community search was initiated.

The search continued on Dec. 31, until the body was found at about 12:28 p.m. The body has been sent to Edmonton for post-mortem examination.

The final report on the cause of death will take up to six months to complete, Menard said.

Because the deceased was found outdoors, the RCMP is reminding the public to take all necessary precautions before travelling on the land or highways, including knowing your route, being appropriately dressed for the conditions, and letting people know your departure and arrival time.
