Man stabbed in the back

A 31-year-old male Jeske Crescent resident has been arrested following a stabbing incident Monday night.

Police were called after a 40-year-old man was stabbed in the back at the residence. The victim was taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital where he is recovering from serious injuries.

According to police, the Jeske Crescent resident at first refused to exit the home before giving himself up to arrest.

Charges were expected to be laid before the end of the week, according to a Tuesday RCMP news release.

Police are asking any witnesses to this incident or those with information to contact the Yellowknife RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.

Stabbing suspects appear in court

Two of the accused in the Nov. 29 stabbing at Fort Gary Apartments appeared in Territorial Court yesterday.

Tyson Ruben-Bucher appeared in front of Judge Bernadette Schmaltz by video and was due to enter a plea regarding the Nov. 29 attempted murder charge and other earlier charges including drug trafficking and sexual assault. The Crown asked for the matter to be delayed until Feb. 5.

Nancy Ruben also appeared in court to set a trial date for the same Nov. 29 incident. Ruben, charged with aggravated assault, appeared to set a date for trial.

Ruben's trial has been tentatively scheduled for May 15 but she is due to appear in court again on Feb 5.

Surface rights board act public meeting

Representatives from the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, including Western Arctic MP Dennis Bevington, will host a public meeting at the Yellowknife Inn at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to gather input on Bill C-47.

Girl power!

The Power of Being a Girl, a one-day YWCA conference aimed at girls in grades 6 to 8, is being held today.

Organizer Ashley MacDonald said she is expecting around 80 students to participate.

Off to Mount Allison

Arviat

Arviat's Curtis Konek and Jordan Konek were off to New Brunswick this month to take part in some intense training and work projects at Mount Allison University with filmmakers from ImagiNative.

The Arviat Film Society and Nanisiniq Arviat History Project (through the University of British Columbia) members will also be talking with university students about various Inuit and Northern issues.

Both Curtis and Jordan have shown themselves to be excellent youth ambassadors for Nunavut during the past two years, making numerous trips across Canada and abroad.

The second annual Silu Dance Competition sponsored by the Sila Rainbow group was a huge hit in Arviat recently.

Dorianna Irkok, Gillian Kaviok and Johnny Kaviok Jr. took top spot at the event to claim the $1,500 grand prize.

Malachi Poungalak and Shelton Nipisar took second place at the competition and were awarded $1,000 for their ability to get jiggy with it.

Whalers play in Rankin

Repulse Bay/Rankin Inlet

The Naujaat (Repulse Bay) Whalers agreed to play its home games in Rankin Inlet in order to be part of the new Northern Hockey Challenge senior men's loop.

The extra day's travel involved with getting teams to Repulse prevented the team from hosting its own home games during the round robin.

Repulse, the defending Avataq First Air Cup champions, agreed to play its home games in Rankin on the condition it would get its games at home should it advance to the divisional and championship playoffs.

Repulse and Kujjuuaq will travel to Rankin for six games during the Feb. 13 weekend, then Repulse and Iqaluit will be in Rankin for six games from March 810.

Soccer coaches to visit

Arviat

A pair of coaches from the international Soccer for Hope and Hoops for Hope programs were scheduled to arrive in Arviat this past week.

The coaches are scheduled to spend two weeks in Arviat to train local coaches for the programming which runs until this coming June. For more on the initiative, please see the Jan. 30 edition of Kivalliq News.

Residents asked to save water

Repulse Bay

Mechanical difficulties with municipal trucks caused the residents of Repulse Bay to be asked to conserve water this past week.

The hamlet had to wait for parts to arrive before the trucks could be repaired and put back on the road.

Arctic Atoms this weekend

Rankin Inlet

The annual Arctic Atoms minor hockey tournament is scheduled to be held in Rankin Inlet this coming weekend, Jan. 2527.
