HAY RIVER
Hay River will showcase itself to hundreds of delegates next summer. It was recently chosen to host NWT Tourism's 2013 annual general meeting and conference.

NWT Tourism executive director Brian Desjardins said Hay River was chosen for a number of reasons.

"Evaluation is based on criteria such as air service, accommodation, ground transportation, meeting facilities, and things to do and see, among others," Desjardins said.

The AGM should bring approximately 150 to 200 delegates to Hay River, according to Desjardins.

Curtis Rowe, a board member with the Hay River Tourism Advisory Committee, said the conference will be good for the town.

"This AGM will raise the profile of Hay River's existing tourism products and hopefully encourage even more people to see tourism as a viable business," Rowe said.

Mayor Andrew Cassidy said it's important to get Hay River's name on the map, and to let people know it can host events such as this one.

"I think our tourism industry is really starting to come into its own," he said. "The fact that our bid was successful is a testament that Hay River is starting to become more recognized."

On Nov. 6, Industry, Tourism and Investment Minister David Ramsay addressed delegates at this year's tourism AGM in Yellowknife and said tour operators need to continue creating and developing attractive packages for potential tourists.

Fraser Pike of 2 Seasons Adventures said there are other advantages to hosting the AGM.

"It's a place for tour operators to meet other tour operators and learn more about the business," Fraser said.

Ramsay said the current market potential for Canada from China alone is 2.7 million visitors.
