Canada's most interesting town?

Inuvik is in the running to be named Canada's most interesting destination.

A short story about the town was recently submitted in a contest to find Canada's most interesting towns, which is being put on by Reader's Digest. Entries are slotted under one of seven categories: best destination, greenest, healthiest, best cuisine, best community spirit, most artistic and most entrepreneurial.

Residents can vote on the magazine's website. If the entry takes the top spot, Inuvik could win $5,000 to put toward a community improvement project. The story's author could also potentially take home $5,000.

The contest closes Dec. 18 and winners will be selected on Jan. 17.

Addictions forum

A forum to address addictions and community wellness in the NWT is coming to Inuvik in the new year.

Tentatively scheduled for Jan. 28 to Feb. 1 in Inuvik, the forum is also set to travel to about 20 other communities throughout the territory to find out what community-based addictions programming residents feel has worked for their area.

The discussion was set to kick off Dec. 3 with a four-day session in Fort McPherson.

"This is part of our ongoing discussions with communities about how we can best support our residents to make healthy choices," said Health Minister Tom Beaulieu. "Addictions touch every community and every family. We will talk to people all over the NWT about what has worked for them and for their loved ones. We need a flexible, made-in-the-NWT solution."

Those who wish to make a nomination must explain what the nominee has done to improve the lives of women in the community, how she has been a good role model and what activities she is involved in. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 1.
