Gathering to kick off Christmas Friendship centre brings in the holiday spirit with 12 days of eventsMiranda Scotland Northern News Services Published Thursday, December 13, 2012
Lillian Elias said she was pleased to be able to participate in an event that promoted sobriety. It showed people that they could have fun without drinking, she said. "I love these gatherings. It's a good thing to do," Elias added, praising the Friendship Centre for its effort. "Ingamo Hall does a good job of trying to get people out like this." Elias, who heard about the sing-along on the rolling channel, came with her sister Susan Peffer. The pair spent part of the night singing Silent Night in Uumarmiutun. It was a special moment, Elias said. Peffer also joined the band on stage to sing gospel music and other Christmas carols. It was a wonderful evening, Peffer said. "It's a nice way to kick off Christmas, a nice way to get everybody together," she said. Friendship Centre project co-ordinator Sandra Gordon said she hopes to see more community members out at the rest of the events. "I think it's a really good idea to get all of the people in the community to come together and help celebrate and join in the Christmas fun." The biggest event of the centre's two weeks of entertainment was the parade, which was scheduled for Dec. 14. Participants were set to start off at Ingamo Hall and end at the Midnight Sun Complex. Afterwards there was scheduled to be a feast and performances from the Inuvik Drummers and Dancers as well as the Ingamo Hall youth jiggers. The fun continues Dec. 15 with the community craft fair. "Anyone is allowed to come, everything is free," Gordon said. "Join and have some fun."
