Smith's Landing First Nation will have a new chief by mid-December.

Fredrick Andrew Wanderingspirit, currently a band councillor, was the only candidate in a byelection to find a new chief when nominations closed on Dec. 3.

Had there been more than one nominee, a byelection would have been held on Dec. 17.

Al Dumont, the First Nation's electoral officer, announced the result of the nomination process in a news release.

"Mr. Wanderingspirit will be eligible to take office on Dec. 18, 2012, which is the day following election day," Dumont stated.

Wanderingspirit could not be reached for comment on his upcoming role as chief.

The byelection became necessary with the resignation of former chief Cheyeanne Paulette in October.

Wanderingspirit will serve out Paulette's term, and an election for chief and council will be held in June of next year.
