Poppy donations doing well

The Yellowknife Cadets have raised about $10,000 during their poppy drives held the past two Saturdays, according to Francine Clouston, the Yellowknife Royal Canadian Legion's president and co-ordinator of Remembrance Day events.

The rest of the donations in trays at businesses around the city will be counted after Remembrance Day.

"The lady that's been maintaining the different trays, she said she's been going to a lot of places quite a few times to empty the money box and everything because they were full. We're doing pretty well, I think," said Clouston.

The cadets will be busy this weekend preparing for the candlelight ceremony on Saturday evening at Lakeview Cemetery and will also be standing guard at the cenotaph by city hall during the all-night vigil.

Stay off the ice

As of the last ice measurements around Yellowknife, the ice thickness is not thick enough yet to safely walk, ski or snowmobile on the surface. On Monday, the City of Yellowknife will update its website with up-to-date ice measurements.

If residents have any questions about ice safety, they can contact the Yellowknife Fire Division.

Christmas parade

There's still time to join the Yellowknife Santa Claus Parade by registering a float with the city by Monday.

The parade will take place on Nov. 17 with an estimated 30 floats lighting up the winter night. This year's theme is "a classic Christmas," so the floats should bring back Christmases of yesteryear.

People's choice award for young fiddler

A Fort Simpson fiddler has won a national music award.

Wesley Hardisty was announced as the winner of the best fiddle CD category at the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards. The awards were presented on Nov. 1 and 2 in Winnipeg.

Hardisty won the award for his debut album 12:12, which was released in May 2011. The album features 10 tracks, five of which Hardisty either wrote or co-wrote. The music is diverse ranging from traditional Celtic fiddle tunes to fiddle rock funk.

Basketball player receives award

This year's Sport Award from the Aboriginal Sports Circle of the NWT has been given to a Fort Simpson athlete.

Laurent Isaiah, a basketball player, received the award at a banquet in Yellowknife on Nov. 1. Minister Robert C. McLeod presented the award to Isaiah.

The award is given to an individual who has excelled in their respective sport at various levels of competition. The individual must display commitment and dedication to training and competition.

An RCMP officer, who was stationed in Fort Providence, was recognized at the same banquet. Const. Amanda McGillivray was presented with the 2012 RCMP Award for Excellence.

McGillivray was recognized for her work with youth in Fort Providence, Gameti and Yellowknife. McGillivray is currently stationed in Yellowknife where she is working with the community policing section.

The service, which is open to the public, will be held at the recreation centre beginning at 10:15 a.m.

Public inputinto energy plan

The territorial government is looking for the public's input into the development of the 2013 Northwest Territories Energy Plan.

The plan, which will be completed by next spring, will lay out the government's energy vision and policies as well as provide details on spending initiatives and government priorities. People can contribute by reading the discussion paper available on the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment's website and providing comments by Dec. 15 or by answering a short online survey.

Arena time changes

The Inuvik Minor Hockey Association is holding a hockey school at the Midnight Sun Complex until Sunday.

Public and family skates at the arena are cancelled as of Nov. 7 and will resume Nov. 13, said Rose Constantineau. The complex is closed Monday because of the statutory holiday in honour of Remembrance Day.

Remembrance Day honoured

Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held Sunday starting at 10:30 a.m. at East 3 School. Following the ceremony, which includes wreath laying, a reception is being held at the Royal Canadian Legion.

Board members needed

The Inuvik Youth Centre is currently looking for board members.

The positions are open to anyone over the age of 12 who wants to have a say in how the centre is run.

All types of experience are welcome, said executive director Samantha Stokell.

"Time commitment is pretty minimal, it's just a couple of hours a month," she said.

Table talk

The Beaufort Delta SPCA is looking for volunteers to help out with a table at the Inuvik Craft and Gift Fair held between Nov. 23 and 25.

"We need crafts and baked goods donated," said Angela McInnes.

Proceeds from the sale will go toward relocating rescue pets to new homes.

Career centre opens

The Inuvialuit Regional Corporation recently celebrated the grand opening of its revamped career centre.

The drop-in centre is open to everyone, not just Inuvialuit, said Candace Morgan, the chief human resources officer.

"We help people move into what's next best for their career. We'll help them all the way through, we're very focused on the individual."

The centre is open five days a week where people can access printers, computers, the Internet and job postings.

The centre also offers help with resumes, cover letters and job applications.

There will also be courses offered, including mining essentials and flight attendant training, starting in the near future, Morgan said.
