Close to 100 people gathered at Somba K'e Civic Plaza on Friday evening and then proceeded to march through downtown streets to raise awareness of violence in Yellowknife, particularly violence affecting women. It was the annual Take Back the Night event.

Lorraine Phaneuf, executive director of the Status of Women Council of the NWT, made reference to a 15-yearold girl who was sexually assaulted on Franklin Avenue after midnight on Sept. 19.

"We may not have the issues of Toronto, but we need to keep our women and children safe on the streets," she said. "I think it's something that we need to continue to work on."

The demonstrators aided in spreading that message by chanting as they made their way through downtown: "We won't be raped, we won't be beat," and "We have the power, we have the rights."
