Fourteen teams, all from Inuvik, participated in the two-day event, which was meant as a showcase both for the new teams and the new gym.

"It's to promote volleyball in the community," said Eric Church, one of the organizers.

"Competition is always part of a tournament, but I believe this is a lot about healthy family activities."

There were volleyballs everywhere inside the school, as youth practised their bumps and volleys before hitting one of the two courts.

Chloe Larocque has been playing volleyball for five years now and said so far, she was pretty impressed with the tournament.

"In the old gym, there was only room for one net so you had to wait forever between games," she said.

"There are two nets here so there's less waiting and more playing."

An admission was charged for entrance into the tournament. The fee was to raise money for travel expenses for the East 3 volleyball teams, said Church.

"It's around $10,000 a team and there are four to six teams that travel," said Church.

"Holding the tournament and having the players help out with the admission booth gives them a sense of ownership and pride over the trips. They helped make it happen."
