Former Western Arctic Conservative Association president Dave McPherson died Sunday after a battle with cancer.

The longtime Northerner was regional vice-president of the National Council of the Conservative Party of Canada at the time of his death. He ran McPherson Mortgage Brokerage in Yellowknife for more than 30 years. See Friday's Yellowknifer for more coverage.

Winter water advisory

The City of Yellowknife has announced the city's surface water lines, which are located north of School Draw Avenue, in Old Town, and on Latham Island, will be shut off Sept. 10. The areas will switch to trucked services. Trucked water and sewer services are provided to Old Town, Latham Island, Ndilo, Kam Lake, Con and Rycon Trailer Park commercial buildings at the Airport as well as some commercial buildings along Old Airport Road.

A partial power outage occurred on Saturday at around 6 p.m. due to a fault on the Bluefish line. "Diesel generators at Jackfish plant were running at the time so power was restored in less than two minutes," stated Bob Kelly, communications manager for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation, in an e-mail to Yellowknifer.

Highway construction underway

Construction crews are busy at on Highway 3 near Yellowknife and the Ingraham Trail. Near kilometre 300 on Highway 3, roughly 40 km west of the city, crews are working on constructing four separate test sections to monitor different permafrost protection systems.

"The hope is that we will come up with a system that absolutely protects the permafrost as much as possible," said Kevin McLeod, director of highways and marine services for the Department of Transportation.

Construction of the test sections is expected to be done by Nov. 15. The sites will then be monitored for one year. Also, along the Ingraham Trail crews have set up a stoplight near kilometre 35 as they begin a multi-year project that aims to widen and strengthen the road, put in new culverts and pave up to kilometre 40 with chipseal, said McLeod.

Gun charges

Arviat

Peter Alatsiak, 24, of Arviat has been charged with careless use of a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose following an incident in that community on Aug. 27.

The Arviat detachment of the RCMP received a call of a disturbance at about 12:45 a.m. involving two brothers who had been fighting.

Alatsiak allegedly went outside with a rifle and discharged a number of rounds into the air before fleeing the scene without the weapon.

He was arrested without incident about an hour later.

Thunder Bay/Coral Harbour

Daniel McKitrick, formerly of Coral Harbour, will be returning for a second year of bantam hockey with the Thunder Bay AAA Kings.

McKitrick had an impressive rookie campaign in 201112 which saw him net 27 goals and add 39 helpers for 66 points in 82 games.

The Kivalliq goal sniper also played in the National Aboriginal Championship with Team Ontario.

McKitrick managed to spend three weeks home in Coral before heading back to Ontario to get in game shape.

He was officially named back to the AAA Kings this past month.

Mayors sit down together

Rankin Inlet/Kivalliq

The community of Rankin Inlet will host the annual Kivalliq Regional Mayor's Meetings later this month.

The region's top municipal leaders are scheduled to meet in Rankin from Sept. 1721.

Family Day includes new bouncy castle

Arviat

The community of Arviat will be hosting a giant Family Day celebration on Sept. 8. The event is being sponsored by AgnicoEagle Mines (AEM).

The festivities will see the official unveiling of Arviat's new Bouncy Castle kid's play area.

The castle, purchased by AEM, is a blowup, fanoperated playhouse made of heavy vinyl.

Kids are able to do a number of funfilled activities inside the castle, including bouncing, sliding and ladder climbing.

Inuit Games

Whale Cove

Traditional athletes from across the region are scheduled to descend upon Whale Cove this coming week to compete in the Kivalliq Inuit Games from Sept. 14-16.

The Games are returning after a year's hiatus in the region.

The Kivalliq Inuit Games were also hosted by Whale Cove when last held in 2010.
