Going with the program Youths enjoy barbecue, final week in Rankin before returning to PeruDarrell Greer Northern News Services Published Wednesday, Sept 19, 2012
The barbecue was sponsored by the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre and Kivalliq Counselling and Support Services. The Canada World Youth group is finishing its stay in Rankin and will head off tomorrow for Palca, Peru, almost smackdab in the middle of the Andes. The youths who spent almost two months in Rankin are from a number of towns in Peru, as well as Canadian kids from Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Masset, B.C., Rosthern, Sask., Pangnirtung and Arviat. The visit marked the first time a program was hosted by Nunavut in Canada World Youth's storied 40year history. Billeted by host families, the youth volunteered to work for a number of organizations during their stay, including the hamlet office, dropin centre, Nunavut Parks, John Ayaruaq Library and Kivalliq Inuit Association, among others. They also took part in a number of activities to increase their knowledge of the Kivalliq and Inuit culture. The group will aid the Healthy Homes Project in Peru, building improved stoves and ecological fridges for members of the community. Most of Canada World Youth's activities in Nunavut have focused on the Kivalliq, with 17 youths from Rankin and 30 from across the region having been involved with its programming. While Nuatii Kablutsiak of Arviat has been to Rankin many times, participating in Canada World Youth has made this stay a special one. Kablutsiak said she's enjoyed just about everything they've done in Rankin, but she can't wait to get to Peru. "I've had a great time here, but I'm really looking forward to going to Peru," said Kablutsiak. "I don't really know what to expect, but I'm sure it will be fun. "I enjoyed all the projects we did here in Rankin, all the time we got to spend together and the camp we had. "It's all been very exciting."
