After pounding the pavement and going door-to-door for months, 40-year-old Phil Moon Son, said he has a clear vision for the city and what he plans to do if elected to city council.

Moon Son, executive director of the NWT and Nunavut Construction Association, believes downtown rejuvenation is big issue facing the city.

"I believe the major issues facing the City of Yellowknife is the rejuvenation of the downtown core, providing more opportunities for community input to city policy and planning," he said.

"We need to be more proactive, balanced and innovative with the long-term economic development plan. We need to promote and support Northern businesses with realistic solutions and to proactively address a high cost of living and affordable housing shortages."

The father of two believes his experience working with businesses - especially within the construction industry - will help council create better policies for rejuvenating the downtown core, and encourage Northern businesses to grow.

"(I'm running) to create opportunities and prosperity through balanced economic development, to promote better communications and planning with a long-term innovative vision of council to assist and support Northern businesses with realistic policies and programs and to enhance and maintain our parks and recreational facilities and green spaces," he said.

In addition to creating more economic opportunities, Moon Son's platform includes: reviewing changes to snow removal and road repair services, exploring curbside recycling services and to ensure the safety and accessibility of Yellowknife streets.

During his nine years in Yellowknife, Moon Son has been the director of land and negotiations for the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, the founding president of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, as well as treasurer for the Western Arctic Conservative Association.
