Kashla's brother, Chris, had the honour of removing the hair Malachi had been growing for the past three years.

Malachi, 17, has despised haircuts ever since his mom accidentally cut off a piece of his ear while cutting his hair years ago.

Malachi said the jokes about his long hair started in Grade 10, so he decided the locks would come off during his high school graduation.

He said his friends reminded him of his decision when he started Grade 12, and they made him sign a contract to go through with it on grad day.

"I actually donated my hair to the Canadian Cancer Society," said Malachi.

"It will be used to help make a real-hair wig for someone battling cancer.

"I had a lot of haircuts when I was young and I didn't really enjoy any of them.

"The last haircut I had was in Grade 9, and it was almost three-feet long the day I had it cut."

Malachi said while he took a lot of teasing about his hair in senior high, there were also a lot of students who thought it was pretty cool.

He said he started growing it again the second after Chris cut it on graduation day and hopes to grow it even longer this time.

"I'm planning to participate in the second phase of Northern Youth Abroad, and then I'll apply for post secondary.

"I did the Canadian Phase and really enjoyed it, so I want to do the International Phase and, after that, I plan to go straight to college.

"I have really varied interests, but I'd have to say I'm particularly interested in computer technology, art and catering.

"I'll decide where to apply and what to take when I finish with Northern Youth Abroad and take things from there."
