Vying to be club champion Golfers aim for personal best scores in tournamentRoxanna Thompson Northern News Services Published Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012
The Club Championship Tournament was played following a stroke play format over 36 holes from Aug. 25 to 26. Seventeen people participated in the event. Many golfers weren't entirely satisfied by their performances. "It was ugly golfing," said Arnold Hope. Hope finished as the men's gross winner at 186, 42 over par. Shane Thompson was the men's net winner, a category that factors in handicaps, at 141. Hope said his score did not represent the way he normally plays golf. He said he was surprised he won, but that many of the men were in the same boat he was. There were a lot of people missing chips and putts, he said. Pars, bogies and no birdies Hope earned a 91 on Saturday and a 95 on Sunday. His score was composed of pars and bogies, no birdies. Despite his score, Hope said he enjoyed hitting balls on the course. Second place in the men's gross category was a tie between Scott McIntosh and Kele Antoine at 188. Third place went to TG Wilson at 190. In the men's net category TJ Bradbury and Hope tied at 150 for second while McIntosh and Antoine tied at 154 for third. In the women's division Sheila Pollard was the gross winner at 199. Pollard said she was pleased with her score, although she noted that Saturday was a better day for her. Pollard shot 94 on Saturday and followed up with a 105 on Sunday. Pollard said her best hole was number four on Saturday where she shot a birdie. During the tournament, all four female competitors covered the course together. "We had so much fun this weekend, it was great," said Pollard. Val Gendron echoed her sentiments. "We had a really good time, we had fun," she said. Gendron was the women's net winner at 129. "I've never had these scores in my life," she said. Gendron said the best she's ever played is 115 over 18 holes. Erin Wyatt was quick to pinpoint Gendron's strong suit. "She has an amazing short game," Wyatt said. In the women's gross category, Gendron finished second with a 215 while Phyllis Harris was in third with 216. In the net category, it was Pollard in second with 143 and Wyatt in third with 152. Gendron also organized the tournament. The event went well with perfect weather, she said. Overall, however, it was too bad that more members didn't play, she said. Steven Thompson won both the gross and net categories in the youth division with 254 and 190 respectively. The winners in each category will receive a beer mug that is inscribed with the words, "Club Champ at Seven Spruce 2012." The winners of the individual prizes including longest putt, closest to the pin, and longest drive will receive a golf towel with the title of their particular award printed on it.
