The draw is a yearly endeavour by the Rankin Inlet fire department to raise money to set aside for new equipment, according to Fire Chief Ambrose Karlik. The amount of money raised was not available by press time, but Karlik said close to 1,000 tickets were sold, priced at $20 for one or $50 for three.

He said the community consistently shows a lot of support for the fire department through the yearly draws, in which the department purchases most of the prizes, and this year was no different, with plenty of entries and a big showing at the draw.

"The money goes back to the community because the fire department belongs to the community of Rankin Inlet," Karlik said.

Well over 100 people lined the walls of Rankin's community arena on Aug. 6 to hear the results of the draw. There was plenty of applause to hear the winners' names read, the odd bit of jeering at certain hockey teams' jerseys, and the inevitable groan when the final Yamaha 350 4x4 ATV was given away, as there were only two people to win but 1,000 in the running.

All in all, the event, of which the Kivalliq Inuit Association's David Ningeongan was master of ceremonies, went off without a hitch.
