Fore-ward vision Three-day golf tournament ends on a sunny noteDanielle Sachs Northern News Services Published Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012
Starting on Friday, 14 teams of two competed and according to Conrad Baetz, golf association president, the event was a success. "The weather hasn't been the greatest but the tournament has still been pretty good," said Baetz. "At the end of the day, everybody's been in pretty good spirits." The tournament was played with a best-ball format and by Saturday, was split into two categories: flight A and flight B. With only three holes to work with, the course has become creative. On the first day of the tournament, teams had to play through the course twice, for a total of six holes. They would tee off from a different location on each round. By Sunday afternoon, each team in the A flight had to play nine holes – once again, teeing off from a different area to change the play enough to make it interesting. James Wolfe made it into the A flight with his teammate, Mario Lemieux. "The course is in much better shape than last year," he said. Jay Courtemanche and Matt Storvold were in the B flight, and by Sunday afternoon, were hitting the driving range waiting for the tournament to end to get one more round of golf in before calling it a day. "We had a bad draw," said Courtemanche. "Friday, it was kind of dark and rainy. Our draw had us starting later." It was Courtemanche's first time playing golf in Inuvik. Baetz is hoping there could be more tournaments the future. "This time next year, we're hoping for three more holes," he said while pointing to the construction equipment running in the background. "We've been focusing a lot on construction," said Baetz of the association, "and what I'm trying to do is focus more on events."
