NTCL alive and well, says president

HAY RIVER
Northern Transportation Company Ltd. (NTCL) is back on its feet, according to president Bill Duffy.

After fighting through a tough stretch, Duffy said the company has seen a vast improvement over the last few years and still views Hay River as playing a significant role in its success.

"Over the last two years, we have made a significant turnaround," he said.

Duffy noted the company had seen a $5-million turnaround in 2011 compared to the previous year, and 2012 is looking even brighter.

The company did make employment positions seasonal again this year, a move Duffy said is hard but necessarily for the company's success.

"It's always a tough decision," he said, adding there is still strong employment levels in Hay River in both the shipping yard and the terminal, and on the company's barges.

The company president estimated there are approximately 50 people employed in Hay River between the shipyard and the terminal.

The company has also made great strides when it comes to scheduling, he said, which is helping the company's turnaround.

Duffy remains certain that, despite rumours to the contrary, Hay River will continue to play a substantial role for NTCL.

"Our plans to go north from the West Coast aren't anywhere in the near future," he said.

"And they aren't in the distant future, either. Hay River is going to be our hub. It will be the base of our business."

Duffy said the next steps for the company are to focus on the core business to continue to regain strength, adding, "We are alive and well, and looking forward to a bright future."
