The centre held the barbecue to thank the community for its continued support, to make people aware of the programs it offers, and to make a special presentation to the Rankin search-and-rescue (SAR) organization.

A number of prizes such as pens, water bottles and sunglasses were also given away during the event.

The centre's Jocelyn Bouthillier said everyone in the community was invited to the barbecue.

He said the centre was more than pleased with the number of people who came out for the event.

"We donated two cabins to the local search and rescue during the barbecue, as well as a plaque to mark the occasion," said Bouthillier.

"The gathering started a little slow, but, by about 45 minutes later, there was a nice crowd and a big lineup had formed for the barbecue.

"We had two barbecues going to serve everyone and we handed out quite a few hotdogs.

"Not everyone knows what we do, so our executive director, George Dunkerley, and the chair of our board, Noah Tiktak, talked a bit about our programs during the event."

Tiktak said the donated cabins were built in 2001, when he first became the centre's youth co-ordinator.

He said the material was purchased by the local justice committee and members of the youth program handled the actual construction.

"So, the cabins were originally part of a partnership between the justice committee and our youth program, but we decided a few weeks ago to donate them to search and rescue," said Tiktak.

"The youth program wasn't really using the cabins that much anymore, and SAR does such a good job in Rankin that we decided they'd be put to better use over the years with them.

"SAR chairman Paul Kanayok and members Wesley Innukshuk and Victoria Noolook were there for the presentation and they were very appreciative of the donation.

"It was a win-win situation for everybody."
