A street that allows access into the new Grace Lake waterside residential subdivision was approved at a special council meeting last week.

Labelled Grace Lake Boulevard, the route stretches from the end of Curry Drive and along 30 residential lots being built on the north shore of Grace Lake.

On Monday night, council also approved an easement into the subdivision to allow Northland Utilities to access a piece of land for future electrical services to the subdivision.

Post-Folk on the Rocks congratulations

A number of city councillors this week are in a good mood after the Folk on the Rocks festivities this past weekend. Coun. Lydia Bardak commended the approximately 350 volunteers involved and noted it was great the weather co-operated for the event. She had a number of family members who were in town who said they were impressed with the cleanliness of the downtown streets.

"My 15-year-old nephew was dying of thirst and looking for a lemonade stand, but was unable to find one," she joked. "My nieces kept looking for the ice cream truck, but it wasn't making any noise. Otherwise everyone had a terrific time."

Women in politics workshop held

Eight Yellowknife women attended what was billed as the first-ever-held-in-Yellowknife Women's Federation of Canadian Municipalities municipal workshop July 14-15, with a key goal of recruiting women into politics.

Coun. Amanda Mallon said the workshop proved to be "productive," and that while no one declared their candidacy, there was some general interest in running for October's municipal election.

Held at city hall, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' goal nationally is to have 30 per cent representation by women on municipal councils.

With Shelagh Montgomery, Lydia Bardak and Mallon on council, the ratio in Yellowknife exceeds the goal by eight per cent.

"There is 43 per cent across the territories in terms of females representing at the municipal level," said Mallon, noting that figure is the highest in the country.

"In Yellowknife, with 38 per cent, we beat the quota."

The two-day workshop included a discussion on how to campaign for council, plus talks on various issues a city councillor may face after winning a seat. Other discussions involved the use of social media like Twitter, said Mallon.

Final litter pickup wraps up

Coun. Paul Falvo thanked volunteers and business sponsors who participated in the final downtown litter pickup of the season on July 11.

"We have always tried to spare the city because the city staff help with all of the other cleanups, but when we ran into some trouble with community services, Brian Kelln (manager of programs with the department of community services) was quick to lend a hand to us. We appreciate that."

The community services department also had a neighbourhood pickup the same day.
