Business owner looking for new adventures

HAY RIVER
As Hay River businesswoman Lizanne Beck begins to clean up shop, she reflects on the past while looking forward to what the future will bring.

Beck is selling her business Gold 'n' Gift and Diamond Willow Cafe after leading the enterprise for the past nine years.

During that time, the shop has drastically transformed.

When she took over, the shop was a small jewelry and giftware store in the Godwin Mall. Under her care and that of her partner, Don Fisher, Gold 'n' Gift moved into the industrial area, expanded its giftware section and added a cafe.

Now, after almost two years in the store's new location, where Emmanuel's Home & Gift operated before shutting down, Beck has decided it is time to move on to something new.

"I am always doing new and different things," she said. "This is the longest I've done something for. I'm just looking for something new to do."

But what that is she isn't sure.

Beck is looking forward to spending more time with her family, both in Hay River and across Canada. But it doesn't make leaving the store any easier.

"It's hard," she said. "This has been my baby for so many years."

Beck noted there are many things about running a business such as the Gold 'n' Gift and Diamond Willow Cafe that she will miss, including her colleagues and her staff, but it is also the small-town business element that will be lost.

"First thing I did this morning was come in and visit three different tables and just say hi to customers and catch up," she said. "I've always enjoyed interacting with the customers."

She is confident that whoever takes over the business will do a great job, but she knows that changes will be made - a natural process when a business is sold.

"You know whenever you sell a business that it's going to change to some degree. I think I've accepted that," she said. "Whenever you get a fresh mind and fresh eyes in, it's always good. It's bittersweet, though. It's always hard to let go."
