The annual Fort Simpson Scramble Tournament sponsored by Kingland Ford attracted 51 players on 13 teams from July 7 to 8. After the final shots were made on Sunday, Kele Antoine, William Michaud, Arnold Hope and Scott McIntosh emerged as the winning team.

The four men finished 11 under par after shooting 67 on Saturday and 66 on Sunday. Antoine attributed the win to the team's mentality.

"We were having fun and supporting each other," he said. "We took our birdies when we could get them," Antoine said, with opportunities on almost every hole.

Antoine helped contribute to the team's success by winning two of the individual prizes. On Sunday, he won the men's longest drive on hole 8 and closest to the pin, only 72 centimetres away, on hole 2. The second shot resulted in a birdie for the team on their third-to-last hole.

Birdies helped the team keep the lead. The men had no bogeys on Saturday but took two on Sunday, which they countered with eight birdies.

Second place in the tournament with 135, nine under par, went to the team of Dave Magarey, Ted Grant, Travis Wright and Michael Rowe. Good drives benefited the team, said Magarey.

"That really kept us in it," he said.

Some of the best drives came from Wright. On Saturday he drove over the green on hole 9, almost as far as the road. A long drive by Wright also contributed to the team's one eagle.

On hole 5, the team shot two including a drive by Wright that landed approximately 30 yards away from the green and a chip by Magarey. This was the first four-person team tournament of the season at the course.

"That makes a difference when you have four people shooting," said Magarey.

It's easier to get a lower score with four people as opposed to two on a team, he said.

The course is also looking really good, Magarey said. A lot of people volunteered over the last week-and-a-half to make improvements to it, he said.

Third place in the tournament went to the team of Trevor Kjeldsli, Byron Blyth, Troy Bradbury and TJ Bradbury with 136.

There were also many individual prizes at the tournament. Keyna Norwegian took the women's longest drive on both days while Paul Simon won for the men on Saturday.

The winners of closest to the pin included Roger Pilling, Norwegian and Sheila Pollard. Longest putt went to Stephen Thompson, Sandy Kidd, Roxanna Thompson and Kelley Andrews-Klein.

Sandra Rowe won $500 P.R. Contracting dollars by landing her ball closest to the tire on the fairway of hole nine. Gladys Norwegian and Louisa Moreau won the closest to the line competition by getting closest to the line of flagging tape that was placed on hole 8 and hole 4 on alternating days.

No one succeeded in getting a hole-in-one on hole 7 to win $10,000 at Kingland Ford.
