Mildred Hall School was broken into by someone throwing large rocks through the windows of the building's rear doors early Wednesday morning.

The school's security alarm went off at about 1:30 a.m., said Metro Huculak, Yellowknife Education District No. 1 superintendent.

"There's nothing missing. They sprayed off the fire extinguishers on the top floor," said Huculak.

He said thanks to a maintenance crew and a carpet cleaning company who dusted the halls and floors and cleaned the carpets, the top floor was ready for the students by 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

"The fire extinguishers aren't toxic. If they were, we would have kept the kids at home," said Huculak.

He said the school must replace a set of doors and four windows.

"They took huge rocks and threw them through the windows and even though they had the steel screens, the largeness of the rock busted the windows," he said.

"I still don't know why people like breaking windows. For the end of June, we're going to be on top security."

He said the summer months are when there are more chances of vandalism, due to the extended daylight hours and warm weather. Ironically, Huculak said he and the maintenance crew had started planning the heightened security for the summer months just last week.

This isn't the first time for break-in attempts at the school. Huculak said last summer he saw kids on the roof from his apartment and ran to the school but the kids had already made it inside.

"But we got them," he said.

RCMP Const. Kathy Law said there are no suspects in the case but it is under investigation.
