City Council Briefs Crack down coming for Gov't Dock Miranda Scotland Northern News Services Published Wednesday, June 13, 2012
The city is looking into leasing the property from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for a dollar each year starting in 2012. If that happens the city is expected to start cracking down on the illegal storage of motor vehicles, boats and materials on site. On Monday, city councillor Shelagh Montgomery expressed her concerns over the issue. "Members of the public have been talking about this for a long time ... and would like to see some jurisdiction on that site," Montgomery said. "I think the city taking that on is only going to help the citizens of Yellowknife have access to a site that is currently blocked in a number of ways." Council is set to discuss the issue further in two weeks when the Yellowknife Harbour Planning Committee releases its final report. Review of Dog Bylaw expected soon A review of the Dog Bylaw is expected to be presented in August so city council can start making decisions on the topic. Administration had started reviewing the bylaw in 2010 but that was put on hold after the territorial government began efforts to strengthen its own Dog Act. That legislation went into effect May 15, 2011. Mayor Gord Van Tighem said council had received e-mails recently that prompted them to encourage administration to start looking into the issue again. Niven Lake resident Cecile Beemer is one of the Yellowknifers who wants to see the bylaw revised to include a limit on the number of dogs residents keep. Beemer said her concerns stem from the large number of dogs kept by her neighbors. They leave them outside at all hours, unattended, Beemer told Yellowknifer previously, adding she is frustrated with the constant barking and strong smell of feces coming from the yard. Enterprise Drive lots selling Companies are starting to buy up fresh industrial lots in the Kam Lake area. So far six of the 25 newly created lots on Enterprise Drive have sold, according to Mayor Gord Van Tighem. The most expensive lot reportedly went for $129,000, while the least expensive sold for $69,000. Van Tighem said he wasn't able to comment on who bought the lots. Local construction company RTL Robinson Enterprises Ltd., which he won the contract for the $1.9 to $2 million project, started developing the property in 2011. No public consultations were held about the project because the zoning for the new subdivision did not change from its existing Kam Lake Industrial Park status. The city started selling the properties May 28.
