Police are remaining tight-lipped about the death of a 20-year-old Yellowknife woman over the weekend.

The death is being considered suspicious, primarily because police don't yet know how the woman died.

"Because we don't know what caused the death, until we get reports back from the coroner's office on autopsy and toxicology, it will remain suspicious until that point. But that's why we don't have an actual cause," said RCMP Const. Kathy Law.

The NWT's chief coroner, Cathy Menard, said Tuesday that the woman had been sent to Edmonton for a post-mortem and that it could be months before her cause of death is determined. In many cases, said Menard, the cause of death is never released.

According to an RCMP press release, Yellowknife RCMP were called to a cabin outside of Yellowknife on Highway 3 around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Law could not say how far the cabin is outside Yellowknife. The RCMP have not released the woman's identity but Law said she believed the next of kin has been notified.
