Fast and Female, a national initiative for girls, hosted its third Northern Youth Empowerment Weekend in the NWT from March 30 to April 1.

Thirty-five girls from eight to 14 years of age attended the event, which this year was held in Fort Smith. Along with the host community, participants came from Yellowknife, Deline, Fort Good Hope, Fort McPherson, Norman Wells and Colville Lake.

The weekend of fun and friendship focused on cross-country skiing. Plus, there were activities such as snowshoeing and dog sledding, along with seminars on leadership and personal growth.

The event aims to inspire Northern girls by building confidence and leadership skills, while showing them how much they have to gain from an active and healthy lifestyle.

The girls were guided by a number of mentors, including cross-country skier and four-time Olympian Sharon Firth of Yellowknife and others from Fort Smith.
