A 62-year-old woman suffered serious injuries Tuesday afternoon after being pushed out of the way as a man accused of shoplifting ran out of the downtown Extra Foods.

The man was confronted by staff at Extra Foods after he attempted to shoplift some meat, according to the manager of Extra Foods.

Jacob Griep, 28, is facing charges of aggravated assault, shoplifting and breach of probation. According to Yellowknife RCMP, as the accused was fleeing the store at about 2:30 p.m., he encountered the elderly woman, who suffered serious injuries after being shoved aside so he could flee from the store.

The injured woman was being treated by emergency medical services personnel when police arrived on the scene. She was then transported to Stanton Territorial Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

As of Friday, RCMP did not know the woman's condition or whether she was still at the hospital.
