The RCMP have charged 28-year-old Mathewsie Alariaq with first-degree murder, break-and-enter, possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to public peace, and breach of probation.

He is in custody and will be transported to Iqaluit for a court appearance on May 8.

Police found the body of a 16-year-old male in a residence at about 7:30 a.m. and identified a suspect, whom they contained inside a residence, RCMP said in a release.

The RCMP Emergency Response Team from Iqaluit flew to the community and arrested the suspect without incident at about 4:30 p.m. that same day.

Police said they are not releasing the name of the victim, but Peter Pitseolak School principal Ed Sheppard said the teen was a Grade 10 student at the school.
