NUNAVUT
The RCMP will continue policing Nunavut for the next two decades.

The federal and territorial governments renewed the Territorial Police Services Agreement, a 20-year contract that includes the creation of a contract management committee, as of April 1.

The three territories and every province, except Quebec and Ontario, will sit on the nationwide committee to talk about the implementation of the contract and discuss other issues such as costs.

"This new agreement builds a new relationship with the RCMP based on effective management and efficiency and will serve to strengthen our already close association," said Justice Minister Daniel Shewchuk in a press release.

"Through this new arrangement, we will strengthen our co-operation with our territorial and provincial counterparts who have signed similar agreements."

The agreement also contains clauses to promote the use of Inuktitut within the force, meaning the RCMP will develop and implement programs to increase services provided in the language, wrote Robin Anawak with the Department of Justice in an e-mail.

He added those programs are yet to be developed. Communities will be consulted when hiring detachment commanders to better reflect their priorities, explained Anawak.

He added the RCMP will also share more information related to the administration of justice.

Nunavut's representative on the contract management committee is the justice minister or a person designated by him, explained Anawak.
