Council Briefs Pumphouse contract goes to JSL Simon Whitehouse Northern News Services Published Friday, March 9, 2012
There have "been several leaks over the past number of years that had to undergo emergency repairs," a city report states. As a result, the city decided to make more significant upgrades. Pumphouse No. 4 was built in 1978. Director of public works Dennis Kefalas told council the company had been selected in an open tender project and that about four or five companies had bid on the job. Coun. David Wind was concerned the city might be too hasty in upgrading the pumphouse. He said it seemed the city was spending money just because it had the money, as opposed to spending on upgrades that "absolutely have to be done." In the end, he said he was glad a local company would be benefiting from the contract. "I wanted to point out that it is an award as a result of a competition held by the city for this work. I understand there were several firms who responded. This will be awarded to a Yellowknife- based company," Wind said. Community barbecue The City of Yellowknife's community barbecue is tentatively planned for June 16, which is the Father's Day weekend. Some councillors felt this weekend would be better than earlier in the month because some residents are travelling to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference. Councillors also did not want to plan after that date because of potential conflicts with Aboriginal Day and Canada Day. The date still requires approval by council. Civic holiday recommended During the municipal services committee Monday, councillors recommended approval of a half-day holiday to recognize the new Long John Jamboree. The half-day holiday, if approved at next week's regular meeting, will take place after noon on Friday, March 23, leading up to the jamboree that weekend. The idea keeps up a tradition that existed with the former Caribou Carnival since 1994.
