Brenda Moreau ranked first in the women's division at the NWT Darts Territorials in Yellowknife from March 16 to 18. Brenda has held the ranking for eight or more years, although not consecutively.

Brenda was one of six members of the Fort Simpson Darts Society to compete in the territorials. The other competitors included Steve Gooderham, Chris Lake, John Dempsey, Louisa Moreau and Sheila Pollard. Fort Simpson was the smallest community in attendance at the territorials, said Brenda.

Louisa Moreau, Brenda's mother, was the only other player from the village who came close to making the territorial team.

Louisa and four other women tied with 12 wins and competed in a playoff for the last three spots and the alternate position for the women's team. Louisa finished last in the playoff.

Losing just one game can have repercussions at the territorials as Brenda knows.

On Friday night during her second game, Brenda lost to Lucy Kasook of Inuvik who only started playing in January.

"She's a super shot," Brenda said.

Brenda knew if she lost one more game during the weekend she would tie with Lucy leading to a playoff.

"I was on guard all weekend," she said.

The loss against Kasook turned out to be Brenda's only loss in 21 games. Kasook won 19 of her games putting her in second.

Every game also mattered in the men's competition.

"It was a lot tougher this year," said Chris Lake.

This was Lake's third year representing Fort Simpson at the territorials. Lake won one game during the weekend.

"The competition was fierce," he said.

Lake said he enjoys going to the event because it allows him to see how his level of play compares to others in the territory. It's also nice to see people you played against in previous years, he said.

Keith Way of Yellowknife was the darts player to beat this year. Way finished the weekend undefeated.

"I was very impressed with his play," said Brenda. "He's a huge asset to the team."

Brenda said the territory's team, which will compete in the National Darts Federation of Canada's national event in Thunder Bay from June 8 to 18, looks very strong. All of the team members except for Kasook and Tanya Ruben have competed at the national event before.

This is Brenda's 18th year playing darts.

As of March 1, she was ranked 14th in Canada.

Brenda has until May 20 to earn points at tournaments to establish her ranking for this season.
