IGLULIK
A police officer in Iglulik shot and killed an armed man yesterday evening.

The RCMP officer went to a home just before 8 p.m. to check on the well being of an adult male, police stated in a press release. Upon arrival, the Mountie was met by a man wielding a weapon and uttering threats, which led the officer to shoot the suspect, the release stated.

The wounded man received medical treatment but eventually succumbed to his injuries, said police.

The RCMP officer suffered non-life threatening injuries.

It is too early to determine what instigated this incident, according to police.

The major crimes unit from Iqaluit is travelling to Iglulik to secure the scene for investigation purposes. An independent police service is being sought to lead the investigation into this incident.
