KIMMIRUT/LAKE HARBOUR
The two RCMP members posted in Kimmirut are safe and uninjured after gunshots were fired toward their home in the early morning of March 18.

Police said four bullets entered one member's home while five entered the other at about 2:40 a.m. on March 18.

The corporal, posted two years in Kimmirut, was at home with his wife and their son, an older male while the constable, posted for the past year, was with his wife and young child, said RCMP Supt. Hilton Smee.

He added both members were able to transport their family to a safe location after learning from a member of the public the identity and whereabouts of the suspected gunman.

The V division emergency response team, along with crisis negotiators, arrived in Kimmirut between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., said Smee. He added the 22-year-old male suspect surrendered to police following negotiations and he was arrested without incident by members of the emergency response team.

Smee said the suspect, a resident of Kimmirut, is in custody and will likely be transported to Iqaluit in the coming days where he will appear before the Nunavut Court of Justice.

He said they've located a .22 calibre rifle but could not confirm whether the weapon is involved in the incident. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident, he added.

"It is important for us to note, this deliberate targeting of our members, the shooting at their residences and ultimately risking the safety of others residents, is deeply disturbing," said Supt Hilton Smee.

Some relief members were sent to the community and will remain until the two regular members and their families are deemed fit to return to that community, said Smee. He said they are considering an Inuit member to Kimmirut to connect with the community and work.

Smee could not provide a timeline as to when charges would be laid nor could he provide a motive as the investigation continues.

RCMP Cst. Doug Scott was shot and murdered in Kimmirut in 2007.
