Facade-lift for Yellowknife

It's title may be a mouthful, but the 2012 Commercial and Residential Condominium Facade and Site Improvement Program plans to give residents and visitors to Yellowknife an eyeful.

The city has about $30,000 to contribute to the beautification and repair of building street fronts. The grant will cover 50 per cent of eligible improvement costs for accepted projects.

This is the first year that eligibility has been open to buildings outside of downtown, including Old Airport Road and Old Town. Grant application forms are available on the city's website and will be accepted until March 31.

Gearing up for another gardening season

Next Wednesday, residents can take a break from the cold winter weather to dream of green herbs and flowers

The Inuvik Community Garden Society and the Inuvik Interagency Committee have partnered up with Ecology North to offer some gardening workshops next Wednesday in Inuvik.

Longtime community gardener Lona Sorenson, from Ecology North and the Yellowknife Community Garden, will be at the Inuvik Interagency Building from noon until 1 p.m. to discuss gardening in the permafrost zone and selecting the right seeds for the soil nutrients and to demonstrate simple soil nutrient tests.

As residents drive by the greenhouse, they might notice a gaping hole where one of the panels used to sit.

The damage was caused by January's windstorm.
