Gabrielle Landrie, who dresses and lives as a female after being born a male, said she was "humiliated and hurt" when Miltenberger allegedly asked her to leave the college during a Dec. 9 visit by Governor General David Johnston.

Landrie, 42, has been informed her complaint has been accepted for review and Miltenberger has a Feb. 22 deadline to reply.

The commission will now determine the next step in the process.

Miltenberger has declined to comment while the matter is before the commission.

Landrie has requested an apology from the MLA.

The NWT Human Rights Commission is not commenting on the complaint.

"For reasons of confidentiality, we won't discuss publicly anything that comes to our office," said Therese Boullard, the commission's director.

In general, if a matter is not resolved, it could go to a public hearing.

Boullard said, depending on the complexity of a complaint, a public hearing could be held from six months to two years into the process.
