AKLAVIK
It took 10 years for new representatives of the Ehditiitat Gwich'in Council to be elected. Forty per cent of participants in Aklavik voted in an election held Jan. 30.

Councillors who were elected to govern the Ehdiitat Gwich'in Council are: Andrew Charlie, Gladys Edwards, Danny Greenland, Kathy Greenland, Michael Greenland, Roxanne John and Eugene Pascal.

The seven newly elected officials will vote - in a closed meeting - to elect a new president at an undisclosed time.

Voters also had their say in a plebiscite which focused on releasing funds from the Gwich'in Land Claim.

The majority of the voters indicated they were in favour of distributing the existing funds to participants over the age of 18, instead of investing the sum for an additional five years to see the investment grow. The amount of the fund was not disclosed.

Calls from community members were heard last December, after complaints were raised about the 10-year term of president Charlie Furlong.

Within a couple of weeks the Ehdiitat Gwich'in Council had an election officer, Richard Papik, and a nomination list compiled.

Furlong refused to comment on his exit or the proceedings surrounding this past week's election.

In addition, the election officer wouldn't comment on the election process.

Attempts to contact newly elected council members were also denied or not returned before press time.

The Ehdiitat Gwich'in Council is part of the larger Gwich'in Tribal Council whose mandate is to represent Gwich'in participants in the Mackenzie Delta region of the NWT and across Canada.
