Slight inflation in January

Despite a slight drop in the price for alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, consumer prices in Yellowknife went up by 0.6 per cent in January 2012 from December 2011, according to recent Statistics Canada data.

The all-items consumer price index found a 0.7 per cent price drop for alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, offset by a two per cent increase in transportation, and 1.1 per cent increase in the cost of food, health, and personal care items.

Between January 2011 and January 2012, prices in the city of Yellowknife increased for all major components, rising four per cent over the year.

Meanwhile, the annual price increase for Canada was estimated at 2.5 per cent.
