Four students from William McDonald School made a presentation Tuesday night to the Yellowknife Education District No. 1 board of trustees on an inspirational event they attended in Vancouver last October.

We Day is a day-long event hosted by Free the Children. The event aims to inspire youth to make positive changes in the world around them, and to spread the word that it's "cool to care," according to the event's website.

"We learned that anyone can make a difference and that together we can change the world," said Ally MacInnis, a Grade 7 student who made the trip to Vancouver last year, during the presentation to the board.

William McDonald sent 29 students to the event, which took place Oct. 13 at Rogers Arena.

"Our school had applied to be one of the schools that would be accepted - you can't buy tickets," said Rachell Simmons, principal at William McDonald School who was one of five chaperones for the event.

Simmons said the school chose to apply for tickets to the event because they wanted to expose their students to the positive message being spread by the organization.

"We said that this is something important that our school-aged children should learn," said Simmons. "That change is possible."

Sir John students heading abroad

The Yk1 board of trustees approved two different international field trips for Sir John Franklin High School students in the month of March.

One group of students will travel to Italy and Greece from March 1 to 12. Due to recent political unrest in Greece, trustee Terry Brookes assured the board that the administration had procedures in place to ensure the safety of students, staff and chaperones while they travel.

Superintendent Metro Huculak added that the tour companies will make alternative arrangements for the students if travel advisories come into effect before or during the trip. This trip was approved-in-principle in September, but the board unanimously passed a motion that officially sanctioned the trip Tuesday night.

Another group of Sir John students are headed to Nairobi, Kenya from Feb. 29 to March 15. Board trustee Reanna Erasmus opposed the motion to approve the trip, stating that she thinks parents and staff should be better informed on what is expected of them and the students during these types of field trips.

The motion was still carried by the remaining board members.

March board meeting cancelled

The Yk1 board of trustees voted to cancel its next board meeting, originally scheduled to be held on the second Tuesday in March, because it falls during the two-week long school break, which is March 3-18.

The next board meeting is scheduled for April 10 at 7 p.m.
