Singing songs of the season

REPULSE BAY
The community of Repulse Bay was alive with the sounds of the holiday season earlier this month when students took to the stage for the annual Tusarvik School Christmas concert.

The majority of the performers came from kindergarten to Grade 6 classes, while students in junior and senior high school who enjoy performing also participated.

Teacher Jennifer Perry said this year's concert featured mainly singing, although there were a few skits and a couple of other holiday-themed presentations.

She said, as is always the case, the Tusarvik gym was packed for the Christmas performance.

"We did have at least one student from every class take part in this year's concert, except for Grade 7 and Grade 8," said Perry.

"Participating in the concert is, kind of, mandatory for students in kindergarten to Grade 6, and we had the Grade 9 students take part and a number of the senior students played musical instruments during the show.

"We always attract a huge crowd every year with our younger students

in the spotlight.

"And everyone wants to see Santa and be there for our big candy toss."

Perry said the annual event rarely has a central theme, with the preferred approach being to allow each teacher to select what their class performs. She said many of the students enjoy the chance to sing in front of a large part of the community every year.

"The Christmas concert is something most of the kids really look forward to every year and the teachers enjoy taking part in it, too.

"The kids enjoy practising for the concert and they actually like getting up on the stage and performing when the big day arrives.

"I don't think we had a single student this year who didn't want to get up on the stage and take part.

"Some years you have a few of the younger kids who don't want to get on stage in front of everybody, but they all seemed pretty excited about it this year.

"The kids feel like little stars for an evening and that's just wonderful to see."
