NUNAVUT
Electricity rates might rise in some parts of Nunavut and fall in others as Qulliq Energy Corporation applied to adjust base rates effective April 1, 2012.

The corporation filed the second phase of its general rate application on Sept. 9 with Lorne Kusugak, the territorial minister responsible for the corporation.

Under the proposed application, five communities - Rankin Inlet, Iqaluit, Pangnirtung, Cape Dorset and Iglulik - would see a commercial rate increase of up to five per cent. Those five communities, plus Baker Lake, would see a domestic rate increase of up to five per cent. All other communities would see a domestic and commercial rate decrease of up to four per cent.

The Utility Rates Review Council will hold public meetings on the subject in Cape Dorset on Nov. 9, Iqaluit on Nov. 10 and both in Rankin Inlet and Repulse Bay on Nov. 12.

The meetings will then head to the Kitikmeot in Taloyoak on Nov. 14 and Cambridge Bay on Nov. 15.
