Sex assault case against chief in court

Facing two counts of sexual assault, Dettah Chief Ed Sangris was not present in territorial court Tuesday morning, the first time the case has arisen in court. His lawyer, Stephen Shabala, appeared on his behalf.

Sangris was charged with sexual assault in October based on incidents alleged to have occurred between 1988 and 1996.

Crown prosecutor Angie Paquin said the Crown will be proceeding by indictment, which involves harsher punishment if there is a conviction.

Sangris's next court date is scheduled for Dec. 13.

The Liard River ice crossing, located outside of Fort Simpson, is expected to open to light vehicles after the weekend, said Greg Whitlock, the regional superintendent for the Department of Transportation.

"With the cold weather things are proceeding quite nicely," he said.

The ice is now between 30 and 35 cm thick and workers are knocking down ridges and preparing to flood the crossing to create a smooth surface before it opens, said Whitlock on Nov. 22.

The five-year opening date average for the crossing is Nov. 29.

Work has yet to begin on the N'dulee ice crossing. The Mackenzie River is still flowing at that point, but Whitlock said hopefully with the cold weather the ice will jam within the next week.
