Construction is well underway on a new industrial subdivision in the Kam Lake area, and lots are likely to come up for sale in time for next year's construction season, according to Mayor Gord Van Tighem.

"Enterprise Drive is being extended to Curry Drive, which is being moved across the road from where it is currently crossing Kam Lake Road," said Van Tighem.

"Then there will be about 30 lots available in Kam Lake probably (between April and June of) next year."

The objective of council in building this subdivision is to "realize opportunities to encourage economic growth and diversity," according to municipal service committee agenda notes.

"In order to meet (city regulations), each proposed lot needs to have access onto an acceptable public roadway," said Van Tighem. "So that way (with the Enterprise Drive extension) you get an extra two rows of lots with road access."

The extension of Enterprise Drive has been in the works since Jan. 10 of this year. No public consultations were held as the new subdivision will have no zoning change from its existing Kam Lake Industrial Park status. Local construction company RTL Robinson Enterprises Ltd. won the contract on the $1.9 to $2 million project last June.

The city predicts it will make all the money it is putting into this project back once the lots are sold.

"What it costs to put the thing in will be recovered from the sale of the lots, as is usual for this type of thing," Van Tighem told Yellowknifer.
