Nunavut News/North rounded out the podium in the best newspaper category, placing third in its class. Judges commented that its third-place finish was "supported by its strong writing. The photography lends strength to its news package." In the premier awards competition, NWT News/North placed third for best local editorial for its editorial on cancer rates in Fort Resolution. Judges commented that "writer Chris Puglia drew a hard line and suggested readers need to take a look at themselves instead of ignoring the facts. All of the entries in this category were solid, well written and thought provoking." Inuvik Drum, Deh Cho Drum, The Hay River Hub and Yellowknifer also picked up national awards. The Hay River Hub scored a blue ribbon for best overall newspaper in its class. It was also awarded first place for best editorial page in its class. Inuvik Drum and Deh Cho Drum also picked up awards in the premier competition. Then Inuvik Drum editor, now NWT News/North assignment editor, Katherine Hudson, took second place for best feature photo. "Hudson's image of little Liam Dillon is another great entry. She's accomplished what lots of us set out to do, capture a moment. You will never see a boy trying harder to prove to his dad that he can do it," judges wrote of her drum-dancing photo. Roxanna Thompson's coverage of arts in the region earned the Deh Cho Drum first place for best coverage of the arts. "This was a very close one to call, but Deh Cho Drum won for having five very unique stories - an artist who uses moose hides, a competitive ice carver (with a spectacular ice carving design) to name a few. Each of the five entries came with big photos and fascinating text. It made for an enjoyable read," the judges commented. Yellowknifer was awarded a blue ribbon in its class for best overall newspaper. It also won second in its class for best editorial page.
